Children and Adolescents

Children often experience a range of developmental and emotional changes that affect not only their mood but also their behavior. When things are not going well for children, they often behave in ways that cause problems. They may act out by not doing what they are told.Or perhaps, they may seem overly anxious or become withdrawn. There are many ways that children show with their behaviors that they are struggling and not coping well.

 Emotional Intelligence Intervention

We offer a research based individual and group intervention program based on the theoretical model of emotional intelligence. The framework for emotional competencies are grouped into four primary components: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, and Relationship Management. The sessions are tailored to suit needs of children and adolescents within three specific age ranges, as 5-7 years; 8-12 years and 13-18 years. The program promotes:

  • Emotional Self-awareness
  • Self- Confidence
  • Self-Control
  • Adaptability
  • Empathy
  • Conflict Management
  • Teamwork & Collaboration

Mindfulness For Children

Mindfulness is “paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, non judgmentally.” It is the practice of bringing attention to our thoughts, feelings and actions as they arise from moment to moment.

When we are mindful, we are paying attention to what is happening right here and now. When children learn to be more ‘present’, they often become more focused, less anxious, are able to think clearly and use existing knowledge more effectively to view things from a broader perspective.
Benefits of Mindfulness:

  • Increases ability to concentrate and focus. Research has proven that children who learn in a mindful way have an increased ability to transfer learned material to new and novel situations, are more creative and think independently.
  • Enhances self-awareness, awareness of others and helps build self esteem.
  • Helps children develop positive & healthy relationships with others around them.

Psychological Assessment

Psychological assessment is often helpful in understanding the strengths and challenges a child/teen may have in their cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning. The psychological assessment process allows for diagnostic clarity and individualized recommendations. This allows for parents, teachers, and therapists to provide intervention and accommodations needed to allow each child to reach their potential.

Attempts are made to accurately differentiate transient emotional problems that reflect a “phase” that the child will outgrow from diagnose disorders. Our team assesses:

  • Developmental concerns
  • Cognitive Ability
  • Achievement/Educational areas
  • Language
  • Visual-Motor skill
  • Social and Behavioral functioning
  • Personality functioning

Social Skills Group

Social skills are a range of behaviors that we use to effectively communicate to each other. These skills can vary from age to age, or range from non-verbal to verbal language skills. Unfortunately some of our children struggle with initiating peer interactions and sustaining friendships. Some are victims of bullying or indulge in bully like behaviors. Some of our children struggle with social anxiety and some need help developing age appropriate play skills.

In our social skills groups we create small groups of children, identified based on their age and skills sets, to create a supportive and nurturing environment, where they can learn, practice and generalize newly learnt social skills.

Parent Coaching

Parent coaching is an individualized intervention program for each family. Through Parent coaching we help you understand your parenting style, your child’s strengths and concerns, why your child struggles in some situations, important life skills and how to help your child blossom through safe and non judgmental dialogs. We help you celebrate your journey of parenthood, survive the difficult times and celebrate all the successes.

For families with children with neuro-developmental disorders like Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Learning Difficulties etc., the journey can be a little different. We help you understand your child’s profile – difficulties, assets and affinities. We help you understand skills that you can foster in your child, areas where they might struggle and how to handle those situations, as well as your own coping skills through the ups and downs.
